酷爱马术表演的丹妮有着自己的爱马与幸福的家庭。但美好的生活随着父亲的破产而宣布结束。父亲被送往法庭宣判；弟弟乔丹跟随继母离开；爱马被卖掉还账，连丹妮自己都被送往丝毫不亲近的乡下的山姆叔叔家生活。突如其来的打击与乡下陌生的生活环境让这个还未成年的小姑娘十分抵触。为了缓解丹妮的心情，叔叔山姆将一只小骡子交给丹妮饲养。重新找到生活乐趣的丹妮给骡子起名“斯托米”并对它悉心照顾和耐心训练。
